Our School Values

At our school, we lead with HEART. That means we care about others, try our best, and stick together. When we use our HEART values, we make our school a kind, caring, and happy place.”
  • H – Honesty: We tell the truth and take responsibility for our actions.
We foster a culture of integrity where pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, speak truthfully, and learn from mistakes. Honesty underpins restorative behaviour practices and builds trust across the school community.
  • E – Engagement: Eyes on, ears open, brain switched on.
Engagement means joining in with your heart and your brain. It’s about being curious, asking questions, and showing that you care about what you’re learning and who you’re learning with
  • A – Ambition: We aim high and always try our best.
We cultivate high aspirations and a growth mindset. Pupils are supported to set personal goals, embrace challenge, and take pride in their progress—aligning with our commitment to equity and excellence.
  • R – Resilience: We will bounce back and keep going.
Resilience means not giving up, even when things feel hard. It’s about trying again, learning from mistakes, and believing you can get better with practice.
  • T – Teamwork: We work together and help each other succeed.
Collaborative learning and pupil leadership opportunities promote teamwork. Pupils develop communication, problem-solving, and social skills that prepare them for life beyond school.

Our Vision

Our vision and aim:
“Everything we do, we do with HEART”.

HEART encapsulates our commitment to holistic development. These values support our vision for behaviour for learning, emotional wellbeing, and character education, while reinforcing our school’s ethos and expectations.

British Values

At Pocklington Junior School, pupils don’t merely learn about British Values, but experience them through their day-to-day school lives.

Democracy: Pupils at Pocklington Junior School practise democracy in action through the annual elections of our school council and the termly elections of our school librarians. Pupils’ voices weigh in on important decisions such as the theme of our newly-refurbished library, and the end-of-term reward for the winning house.

Mutual Respect: Respect for all members of our school community is at the heart of our behaviour policy. We have regular opportunities during PSHE lessons and assemblies, and wider curriculum events such as Black History Month and Anti-bullying week, to develop our understanding of this fundamental British value.

Tolerance:  The acceptance and celebration of different beliefs permeates our curriculum, in particular, our RE and PSHE curriculum. Whole-school events such as Protected Characteristics Day and our fundraising for the ‘Little People’ charity help pupils to extend their understanding of tolerance. We are proud of our inclusive approach to pupils with SEND.

The Rule of Law: Our annual ‘Parliament Week’ provides a valuable opportunity for pupils to understand the laws and governance of the United Kingdom. On a school level, our behaviour policy and individual class charters ensure that pupils appreciate the role that rules and laws play in our lives.

Individual Liberty: Every pupil at our school is supported to develop self-knowledge and self-esteem. Our anti-bullying and growth mindset culture ensure that all pupils are confident to express themselves.
